WHAT IS ORIENTEERING?

Orienteering is a sport in which participants use navigation skills to complete an Orienteering course in the shortest time possible.  In order to do this, participants must use their skills to select the most efficient route around the course.  The sport is often described as a treasure hunt, because participants look for “treasure” (Orienteering controls) that have been placed around the camp.  In order to find the controls, participants must use their skills in map and compass, and understanding of terrain features.  Orienteering can be a competitive event, or can be done just for fun!
